Sportsmanship – Sportsmanship is a positive attribute usually associated with team sports such as soccer or tennis. However, BJJ is a sport that requires a very high level of sportsmanship. Kids will quickly learn how to be respectful to their coach and partners. These skills are demonstrated by the shaking of hands at the end of class and two bows given to the coach and founder of the gym.

Anatomy – Not only do kids learn the importance of physical health, but they also learn a lot about the anatomy of the human body. Understanding how their body works, what it can do and how to use it to protect themselves is an important lesson. Basic knowledge including strong and weak areas of the body can start to be understood quite quickly as well as which ways are safe or dangerous to move our bodies. This is something that is guided by Gracie BJJ instructors in a safe and easy way for kids to understand, making sure they are careful and respect their partners and their own body.

Confidence – Confidence is a by-product of Jiu Jitsu and is an attribute that all kids will gain over time doing BJJ classes. Kids who suffer from low confidence levels will especially benefit from the sport as they will start to learn the meaning of confidence which is; the feeling or belief that one can have faith in or rely on someone or something. All BJJ students will, therefore, learn to rely on themselves and in time will be confident in their own ability to defend and protect themselves.

Discipline – Jiu Jitsu requires discipline in all that attend and can be extremely beneficial for kids. Discipline allows kids to be respectful and positive members of society. The basic requirements of class; punctuality, listening to the coach, and following instructions allow kids to understand many concepts of discipline which will be useful not only on the mats but also in school, at home, and in their future.

Self-Defence – Last but not least…the most common idea of Jiu Jitsu is that it provides self-defence. This is true and is important for kids of all ages. The idea that they need to protect themselves is also an important lesson as they can start to understand the value of themselves and their worth.
